For years when you wanted to find out about St Martin’s School, Rosettenville, which is in Johannesburg, South Africa, there was only this site. (If it’s your work and you read this, do you mind if we take content from your site? I tried to email you a few times over a couple of years with no success.) Now it’s gone.
[Dec 06]Does anyone want to volunteer to transcribe the info from Richard Shrewsbury’s site (above) which has disappeared? I have copies of it. Mail me - myfirstname.mylastname at Tanasity.com. (You get to figure out my address to prove that you aren’t a program collecting email addresses from the web - Jeff Veit.)
Then suddenly four come along at once! I put this site together. St Martin’s has it's own web site. Patricia X put one up. And Craig Langley left a comment on this page saying “The official st martins old boys and girls site will be www.smob.co.za we are in process in devoloping it in conjunction with the school if you guys have any old photo that you want on the website please email me craig at smob dot co dot za and all ideas are welcome.” At the moment that site is empty.
This site is different: it’s a wiki, which means that if you are reading this page, you can change it. Just press the Edit button next to a paragraph to change that paragraph, or the button at the top to edit the whole page. [We’ve had a couple of instances of nastiness - you might want to bear in mind that although we don’t make you sign in, your internet details are recorded with every edit.]
4 June 2007: Hey folks - clearly this is something that some people use. I’m going to upgrade it to a bigger better system. One of the good things about this system is that you don’t have to log-in to add something. The bad thing about this though, is that you get software which defaces sites like this with adverts. :( So far we’ve been lucky. But it’s happened on other sites that I run. So here’s my proposal - I’ll start by setting up the new software with open access. The first time that we get spam, I’ll make it so that only people who have an account on the system can make changes. But I’ll leave it so that anyone can help themselves to an account. Then if we still get spam, I’ll change it so that to get an account you have to get someone else who is already registered on the site to vouch for you. Does this sound like a reasonable set of steps? It’s not going to happen today, but sometime over the next few months. There’s another plus: I can set up a forum too if I use different software. Leave discussion below. Jeff.

Does anyone remember a Frank de Sales? Or know his real name? He’s written a book (Devil’s Island, ISBN 978-0-620-40362-7, released in the US scheduled for December although available from the distributor now) where one of the main characters has flashbacks to a school immediately recognisable... Not anything of what he says is complementary and some of it is outright slander! - Hurley Wessey (left 1985)
6 September 2007. Mark McGiddy kindly forwarded an ad that the school have been running:
CALLING ALL ALUMNI In 2008 the school will be celebrating its fiftieth anniversary.
If you attended or worked at St Martin’s School (including St Martin’s Preparatory School), and would like to have your details added to the school’s database, then we would appreciate hearing from you.
Please contact Linda Frahm in the Alumni Office alumni@stmartin.co.za. Once the jubilee programme has been finalised it will be distributed by email to all alumni on the database.
In addition to contacting the Alumni Office, please also record your details on gradfinder.com where you will find the school’s page. This website is a wonderful way of staying in touch with school friends. The service is free and you can put the gradfinder shortcut on your computer’s desktop.
We look forward to hearing from you and all those friends you tell about this advertisement.
St Martin’s School 114 Victoria Stree ROSETTENVILLE, JOHANNESBURG Telephone: 011 435 0735/6/7 Fax: 011 7303 alumni@stmartin.co.za
If anyone registers for gradfinder, please add a report on the experience below. Of course I’d suggest adding your details to an excellent site, not that far from your mouse pointer right now. Jeff.
Add your name and some details. When this list gets too big we’ll move it to another page.
Any views on how this should be organised? Date? First name? Surname? Currently by first name because that seems to make more sense. If the list gets big I’ll shove it in a database so it can be searched and organised and sliced and diced.
Idea - What do you think of using facebook (voluntary) or something which can organise the social network better and allow users to opt in as little or as much as they want? Stuart M
